Get Ready for ICE!

The Guidant John Rose Minnesota Oval will open on Friday November 8, with a public skating and open hockey session.  The long track season will officially open Saturday November 9 for a morning session.

Long track skaters have multiple options for accessing the oval.  There are open speedskating times every weekday from 2:00-3:15, and Tuesday nights from 9:00-10:15. (Open speedskating times can be found on the Skate the Oval website). For those who intend to skate several times a week and are not able to attend mid-day sessions, the Greater Minnesota Speedskating Association (GMSA) offers ice time Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, and racing or practice ice weekend mornings.  To access GMSA ice, skaters must join US Speedskating (join here on the US Speedskating website) and then pay in advance for one of the GMSA ice time packages.  Prices range from $550 for the season for three nights and two weekend mornings per week, to $80 plus a per-race fee for racing only.  For details, go to the GMSA website and look on the right side under “Important Forms.”  In addition, the calendar of GMSA skating times should be on their website soon.

For those looking for instruction, there will be adult speedskating lessons offered on Wednesdays, with skate rental available.  For those looking for ongoing coaching, skaters who join Twin City Speedskating (formerly Plymouth Wayzata Speedskating) will have access to one and possibly two nights per week of coached workouts during GMSA ice time.
Never speedskated, but want to give it a try?  Come to “Try Speedskating” Tuesday Nov.11 at the Oval, from 5:30-7:00.  While speedskate rental will not be available, you can bring your own hockey, figure or speedskates, and representatives from Twin City Speedskating/MN Masters will be available to focus on the adult skaters and provide them with a basic overview of speedskating.  It should be a fun night, so come out and give it a try!
See you on the ice soon!
