The second annual Loppet Speedskating events were met with crisp sunshine on Friday afternoon for the 25k race. Eighteen skaters finished the race. Isaac Harker and Ilsa Schobe won. The 50k was held Saturday afternoon in overcast and windy conditions. Skaters had to fight the wind on the front stretch, but had quite a draft on the back stretch. Six skaters managed to complete the entire event with Kelin Dunfee and Melissa Dahlmann winning. Ice conditions, while far from those in the Olympic Oval in Salt Lake, were much improved from last season. There were far fewer falls, and I didn’t see any substantial injuries. Special nod to Lisa Hambly for completing the second half of the 50k event with a broken spring on her right skate – that would have been all the excuse I would have needed to find a warm locale. Congratulations to Bruce Anderson for completing both events.

Saturday’s 50k
The top two positions were never in doubt. Kelin sprinted off the line with a giant grin that would remain frozen on his face for most of the race. The times below are displaying poorly. Kelin completed the 50k in 1 hour and 41 minutes, Melissa finished in 2 hours and 3 minutes to win the women’s event. After that spectators had a twenty minute wait for the pack of four Ulrich Fink, Bruce Anderson, Lisa Hambly, and Sarah Kruger to finish the race. The guys were a lap ahead and in the final turn the German Fink sprinted ahead of Bruce Anderson for second place in the men’s event. Lisa would be credited with finishing ahead of Sarah, though they came across the line hand in hand. Four skaters gave it a good effort but didn’t complete the event.
